What is CPCB II and CPCB IV+?

There are two sets of guidelines - CPCB II and CPCB IV+, which specify the emission limits for various pollutants.
CPCB II DG Sets were introduced in 2001 and have been in use for almost two decades now. These generators have been equipped with basic emission control devices such as catalytic converters and wet scrubbers to reduce the emission of pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM). However, with the increasing concern for air quality, these guidelines were revised by CPCB in 2014, leading to the introduction of CPCB IV+ DG Sets.
CPCB IV+ DG Sets are considered to be more advanced and environmentally friendly compared to their predecessor. These generators have been equipped with advanced technologies such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR), diesel particulate filters (DPF), and oxidation catalysts to further reduce the emission of pollutants. They also have stricter emission limits, making them more efficient in reducing air pollution.
Differences between CPCB II and CPCB IV+ DG Sets
1. Emission Limits:
The most significant difference between CPCB II and CPCB IV+ DG Sets lies in their emission limits. CPCB II DG Sets have a maximum emission limit of 250 g/kWh for NOx, 50 g/kWh for CO, and 300 g/kWh for HC. On the other hand, CPCB IV+ DG Sets have a much lower emission limit of 190 g/kWh for NOx, 30 g/kWh for CO, and 100 g/kWh for HC. This means that CPCB IV+ DG Sets emit significantly less pollutants compared to their predecessor, making them more environmentally friendly.
2. Technology Used:
CPCB IV+ DG Sets use advanced technologies like SCR, DPF, and oxidation catalysts to reduce emissions. SCR is a technology that uses a chemical reaction to convert harmful NOx into less harmful nitrogen and water vapor. DPF acts as a filter that captures soot particles from the exhaust gases, thereby reducing particulate matter emissions. These technologies are not present in CPCB II DG Sets, making them less efficient in controlling pollution.
3. Fuel Efficiency:
Another significant difference between the two sets of guidelines is the fuel efficiency of the generators. CPCB IV+ DG Sets are designed to be more fuel-efficient compared to CPCB II DG Sets due to the use of advanced technologies. This means that they consume less fuel to produce the same amount of power, thus reducing the overall cost of operation.
4. Noise Emission:
CPCB IV+ DG Sets are designed to reduce noise emissions, making them quieter compared to CPCB II DG Sets. This is achieved through the use of advanced silencers and sound-attenuating materials in the exhaust system.
